TEL AVIV, Israel (UPI) — Israeli scientists say they have developed a method of replicating insulin-producing beta cells, suggesting a new treatment for type 1 diabetes.

Researchers led by Tel Aviv University Professor Shimon Efrat have developed a way to cultivate, in the laboratory, insulin-producing beta cells derived from human tissue. If such new healthy cells can be implanted into type 1 diabetes patients, the researchers say their method could artificially replicate the insulin cells, thereby ensuring fewer people will die while waiting for pancreas or kidney transplants.

Efrat said his research paves the way for new and alternative forms of treatment in cases in which organ transplantation is not an option. And, one day, the procedure might become as simple as a blood transfusion.

“The shortage of organ donors makes the development of new cell sources for cell therapy critical,” said Efrat. “Using beta cell expansion, we are able to grow a massive reserve of healthy cells that may be made to produce enough insulin to restore the function of the destroyed cells.”

The research that included graduate students Holger Russ and Yael Bar appears in the journal Diabetes and is featured in a report by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Taking Care of Longer Hair

I have a very long hair now. It almost reach my butt. The problem is that I am having some split ends now which is not good. Thanks to this info I read about hair. I just read this health and beauty tip in my mailbox and wish to share it to you before I delete it. here it is…for ladies with long hair this might help!!

If you’re trying to grow your hair out, start using a wide-toothed comb on your hair while it’s wet. Using brushes as your hair gets longer can lead to frizz and split ends.

Strawberries..fruits in My Kitchen

I picked up some strawberries in our garden yesterday. They are very fresh with no chemicals!!! I ate them all!! very sweet!! want some!!! pick it now!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strawberries

Garden strawberries are a common variety of strawberry cultivated worldwide. Like other species of Fragaria (strawberries), it belongs to the family Rosaceae. Technically it is not a fruit although it is known as an accessory fruit, in that the fleshy part is derived not from the plant’s ovaries (achenes) but from the peg at the bottom of the bowl-shaped hypanthium that holds the ovaries.

The Garden Strawberry was first bred in Europe in the early 18th century, and represents the accidental cross of Fragaria virginiana from eastern North America, which was noted for its flavor, and Fragaria chiloensis from Chile, which was noted for its large size.

Cultivars of Fragaria × ananassa have replaced in commercial production the Woodland Strawberry, which was the first strawberry species cultivated in the early 17th century.

Old drug shows new use against hepatitis C

by United Press International (arcamax.com)

STANFORD, Calif. (UPI) — U.S. researchers say they’ve developed a novel approach to fighting the hepatitis C virus’s reproduction process using an obsolete antihistamine.

The Stanford University Medical Center scientists said the advance involves two discoveries. “One is that a protein called NS4B is instrumental in binding some of the genetic material, or RNA, and allowing the hepatitis C virus to replicate,” the researchers said. “The other is that the former anti-itching drug clemizole hydrochloride could hinder that protein, resulting in a tenfold decrease in virus replication with no apparent harm to infected liver-like cells.”

Since the former antihistamine drug has previously been used by people, it is automatically eligible for human testing.

“We’re excited about this and we’re actively moving forward toward clinical trials,” said Dr. Jeffrey Glenn, an associate professor of gastroenterology and hepatology and a senior co-author of the paper with Professor Stephen Quake. The lead authors are Dr. Shirit Einav and bioengineer Doron Gerber.

The research that also included doctoral student Paul Bryson, postdoctoral student Ella Sklan, research associate Menashe Elazar and Sebastian Maerkl, a former member of Quake’s group, appears in the online edition of the journal Nature Biotechnology.

New endometrial cancer therapy reported

by United Press International (arcamax.com)

PHOENIX (UPI) — U.S. scientists say they have found a new way to treat endometrial cancer — cancer of the uterine lining — that slows tumor growth and kills cancer cells.

Researchers at the Translational Genomics Research Institute in Phoenix and the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis said they found that introducing a particular inhibitor drug can turn off’ receptors responsible for the growth of tumors in a significant number of patients with endometrial cancer.

They said they also determined the inhibitor drug proved effective even in cancer tumors containing a commonly occurring mutant gene, PTEN, previously associated with resistance to drug treatment.

The scientists, led by Drs. Pamela Pollock and Paul Goodfellow, a Washington University professor, said they used the latest genome-scanning technology to sequence 116 endometrial tumor samples in conducting the research. They said they plan to begin a clinical trial within the next year.

The findings are detailed as a priority report in the journal Cancer Research.

Potential type 1 diabetes therapy studied

BOSTON (UPI) — U.S. scientists say they confirmed in human experiments a potential type 1 diabetes therapy that might reverse the disease.

Researchers led by Dr. Denise Faustman, director of the Massachusetts General Hospital’s immunobiology laboratory, confirmed the mechanism behind the potential new therapy. The scientists showed blocking a metabolic pathway regulating the immune system eliminated immune cells that react against a patient’s own tissues.

Faustman and her team previously discovered a technique that reversed type 1 diabetes in a mouse model. They said the current study is the first demonstration of the strategy in humans and supports the viability of a phase I clinical trial that is under way.

“Our studies in mice showed that we could selectively kill the defective autoimmune cells that were destroying insulin-producing islets,” said Faustman. “These results show that the same selective destruction can occur in human cells and connect what we saw in our animal studies with the protocol we are pursuing in our Phase I clinical trial.”

The research is reported in the early online issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
