Fresh Fruits in the market

We all know that fruits are good source of vitamins and minerals. We always try to eat any fruits that is available fresh from our garden or the one we buy in the market. The problem is we don’t know if these fruits we buy in the market are treated with chemicals such as pesticides and insecticides. Not really good! here are the different fruits fresh from the market..

Botanic fruit and culinary fruit

Many true fruits, in a botanical sense, are treated as vegetables in cooking and food preparation because they are not sweet. These culinary vegetables include cucurbits (e.g., squash, pumpkin, and cucumber), tomatoes, peas, beans, corn, eggplant, and sweet pepper; some spices, such as allspice and chilies, are botanical fruits. Occasionally, though rarely, a culinary “fruit” is not a true fruit in the botanical sense. For example, rhubarb is often referred to as a fruit, because it is used to make sweet desserts such as pies, though only the petiole of the rhubarb plant is edible. In the culinary sense, a fruit is usually any sweet tasting plant product associated with seed(s), a vegetable is any savoury or less sweet plant product, and a nut is any hard, oily, and shelled plant product.

Technically, a cereal grain is a fruit termed a caryopsis. However, the fruit wall is very thin and fused to the seed coat so almost all of the edible grain is actually a seed. Therefore, cereal grains, such as corn, wheat and rice are better considered edible seeds, although some references list them as fruits. Edible gymnosperm seeds are often misleadingly given fruit names, e.g. pine nuts, ginkgo nuts, and juniper berries. source: wikipedia

Health and Beauty Tip for Women

Just sharing this beauty tip especially to all women who have oily skin like me.

Treating Oily Skin

If you feel like your skin is too oily and you need toner, apply it to the T-zone, then rinse it off. Leaving it can make your skin too dry. Every three days or so, you can also use a clay mask to absorb excess oil.

Selecting Hosiery

Make your legs look longer and slimmer by matching your hose as closely as possibly to your skirt and shoes. For two-toned shoes, wear a neutral color, or try to match the lightest color in the shoes — never wear hose darker than this!

Lumpia Shanghai: A Filipino Eggroll Specialty

It’s been a long time I have not cook Lumpia Shanghai, a Filipino eggroll specialty. I just remember cooking it again because I tasted one from a friend last Thursday. Lumpia Shanghai is made-up of almost meat. Whether it is pork or beef or might want to combine them together, it still a delicious recipe. Everyone has its own way of preparing it especially the ingredients. here is what I always use;

LUMPIA SHANGHAI INGREDIENTS:

* 1 pound ground pork
* 1 pound ground beef
* 1 medium onion, finely chopped
* 1 carrot, grated
* 1/4 cup soy sauce
* 2 1/2 teaspoons black pepper
* 1 1/2 tablespoons garlic powder
* oyster sauce to taste
* 1 (16 ounce) package spring roll wrappers
* 1 1/2 quarts oil for frying
1. In a Large bowl, combine ground pork, ground beef, onion, and carrot. Make sure to completely mix everything. I usually mix it with a mixer. I don’t use my hand to mix it like what others do but you can also. Knead the meat in the bowl if you must. Gradually blend in the soy sauce , oyster sauce, black pepper and garlic powder until all ingredients are evenly distributed.
2. Lay out a few wrappers at a time on a flat surface, and place about 2 tablespoons of the filling in a line down the center of the wrapper. Make sure the filling is no thicker than your thumb, or the wrapper will cook faster than the meat. Take the bottom and top edges of the wrapper and fold them towards the center. Take the left and right sides, and fold them towards the center. Moisten the last edge of the wrapper to seal. You can water to moisten but I sometimes use egg yolk.
3. Heat the oil in a deep-fryer or heavy skillet to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Fry 3 or 4 lumpia at a time. Fry for about 3 or 4 minutes, turning once. Lumpia are cooked through when they float, and the wrapper is golden brown. Cut in half, or serve as is with dipping sauce. We use sweet and sour sauce but sometimes I prefer eating it without sauce.

below is the last photo I made from my Lumpia Shanghai. sorry it looks messy.

What is meniscus

I am just curious to know about Meniscus. I had an appointment to the radiologist last Feb. 6. I had a problem about my knee. Sometimes it is so painful that I have a hard time with walking or standing too long. Our house doctor said that it is better for me to have it x-ray which I had already done. He also mentioned that it might be about Meniscus. I was still waiting for the result until the radiologist will send the findings to our house doctor. Hopefully I will know it this week. here is some info about Meniscus.

In anatomy, a meniscus (from Greek μηνίσκος meniskos, “crescent” is a crescent-shaped fibrocartilaginous structure present in the knee, acromioclavicular, sternoclavicular, and temporomandibular joints that, in contrast to articular disks, only partly divides a joint cavity. A small meniscus also occurs in the radio-carpal joint.

It usually refers to either of two specific parts of cartilage of the knee: The lateral and medial menisci. Both are cartilaginous tissues that provide structural integrity to the knee when it undergoes tension and torsion. The menisci are also known as ‘semi-lunar’ cartilages – referring to their half-moon “C” shape – a term which has been largely dropped by the medical profession, but which led to the menisci being called knee ‘cartilages’ by the lay public.

FUNCTION:

The menisci act to disperse the weight of the body and reduce friction during movement. Since the condyles of the femur and tibia meet at one point (which changes during flexion and extension), the menisci spread the load of the body’s weight. This differs from sesamoid bones, which are made of osseous tissue and whose function primarily is to protect the nearby tendon and to increase its mechanical effect. source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meniscus_(anatomy)

Health and Beauty Tip

I guess I got some good stuffs especially for tall women..check this out.this was forwarded in my email. just thought of sharing it before I delete it. have a great day!

Clothes for Tall Women

Skirts that are especially short or especially long tend to be unflattering on taller women. Rather than tucking in shirts and blouses, wear them over skirts or pants. Wide belts are very flattering, but tight ones should be avoided.
