German Breads

I would like to share first a story about German bread. This was only shared to me by a friend. Let me continue;

“Once there was an Asian woman who was married to a German guy. During the first days of that woman in Germany, she saw a round- shaped and dark or brown colored object on the table. She tried to touch the object and found out that it was very hard. She was asking herself why that certain stone was on the table. Her German husband saw it and explained that it was a bread.” ….and so the story goes..the Asian woman begun to love the bread!

Bread called in German as Brot is a significant part of German cuisine. It is considered necessary for a healthy diet. It is said that there are about 600 main types of breads and 1,200 different types of pastries and rolls that are produced in about 17,000 bakeries and another 10,000 in-shop bakeries. Bread is served usually for breakfast and in the evening as sandwiches, but rarely as a side dish for the main meal.

Germany’s most popular breads are:

1. Rye-wheat (“Roggenmischbrot”)
2. Toast bread (“Toastbrot”)
3. Whole-grain (“Vollkornbrot”)
4. Wheat-rye (“Weizenmischbrot”)
5. White bread (“Weißbrot”)
6. Multi-grain, usually wheat-rye-oats with sesame or linseed (“Mehrkornbrot”)
7. Rye (“Roggenbrot”)
8. Sunflower seeds in dark rye bread (“Sonnenblumenkernbrot”)
9. Pumpkin seeds in dark rye bread (“Kürbiskernbrot”)
10. Roasted onions in light wheat-rye bread (“Zwiebelbrot”)

Green Leafy Vegetables in Wiesbaden Market

Anyone who don’t love to eat vegetables? I hope you do because we always love to! A vegetable is any of the edible part of a plant with savory flavor. It has nutritional value and can be a part of our main meals or snakcs. Yellow or orange colored vegetables are rich in carotenes. Green leafy vegetables where green pigment chlorophyll are present contain vitamins a, minerals, dietary fiber and carbohydrates.

That is the reason why we love to eat fruits and vegetables.

Fresh Fishes!

Do you love to eat fish? Yes, we do! Fresh fish is the best one but I seldom see it in the grocery stores or market in our nearby towns and cities. Fish is an important food source. Saltwater fish especially, is high in omega 3 fatty acids, which are heart-friendly, and a regular diet of fish is highly recommended by nutritionists.

Sad to say, due to the polluted environments we have right now like seas, lakes and rivers, fish can sometimes be very dangerous because of the metal they contain especially the liquid metal mercury.

Grilled Strawberry Shortcake

This is a great idea for a desert that you can make fresh at your next cookout right outside on the grill if you like, or you can make it inside on your stove top griddle.

Shortcake Ingredients

– 1/2 cup of whole wheat flour
-¾ cup self rising flour, with a little extra for your work surface
– 1/2 cup milk
– 1 egg
– 1 tablespoon sugar
– 1 teaspoon baking powder
– 1 tablespoon oil
– ¼ teaspoon salt

Basting Sauce

– 3 tablespoons butter
– 2 tablespoons honey
– 1 tablespoon liquor

Filling
– 2 cups sliced strawberries
– 1 tablespoon raw sugar
– 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Ice Cream

– Although vanilla is the “traditional” flavor, consider chocolate or banana ice cream to add even more complexity to the palate.

Cooking Directions

Shortcake

To make the shortcakes, have the griddle medium high. Combine all dry ingredients in a large bowl. In a separate bowl whisk together the eggs, milk and oil and blend into dry ingredients with a large wooden spoon, which will result in a cookie-like dough. Roll dough out onto a floured surface like biscuit dough. Cut into round pieces with a cookie-cutter or small glass.

Lightly oil a sauté pan and place it on the grill to heat. When hot, add the biscuits, cook them about 5 to 10 minutes on one side then flip them in the pan and cook another 5 to 10 minutes, but you do not want them fully cooked. Remove them from the heat while you make the sauce.

Basting Sauce

In a small, heavy saucepan combine the honey, liquor and butter and heat until the butter is melted and remove from grill.

Combining

Split the cooled biscuits and baste with the honey sauce. Put them back on the grill the split side down and baste the tops with more honey sauce. Cook for 5 minutes, flipping often, until the biscuits are thoroughly cooked and have grill marks and crispy edges.

Place the strawberries, raw sugar and cinnamon in the basting sauce pan and quickly sauté on the grill, being careful not to overcook the strawberries so they become too mushy. Put the split biscuits open-faced on a plate and pour the strawberries over the top. Add a scoop of ice cream on the side and serve.

Eco Friendly/Green Foods To Help You Shed the Pounds/Cure Sickness

Nature has provided us with a cornucopia of foods, herbs and beverages that can do wonders in helping you lose weight — without eating less — and boost your immune system so that you can fight off illness. Keep plenty of these time-tested foods on your grocery list year-round and work them into your everyday diet to give your body the tools it needs to be fit, healthy and vibrant without having to resort to expensive prescriptions, traumatic workouts or dangers diet programs.

Green Tea

The attributes of the simple wonder of nature continue to mount up as it has gained popularity in the west over the last decade, although it has been used in China for hundreds of years. The anti-oxidant qualities of this refreshing, light brew help flush away the bodily toxins that lead to weakened immune systems and susceptibility to viruses. The inherent cancer-fighting properties have been verified by the National Cancer Institute in their 1994 research that shared how the presence of polyphenols and catechins reduce the risk of certain cancers in the Chinese population by up to 60%. Green tea also affects cholesterol levels by balancing the ratio of good (HDL) cholesterol and the bad (LDL) cholesterol.

Cayenne Pepper

Spice up your organic dishes with Cayenne pepper, one of nature’s most amazing cleansers that will help you literally “burn-out” those pesky fat cells while keeping your blood purified so you feel strong and vital. If you can work this miracle seasoning into at least one meal per day, you can greatly increase your chances of a successful diet. Include Cayenne pepper in homemade chilies, stews and curries to give them a medicinal slant while making them taste delicious. You can also lightly sprinkle Cayenne into chicken salad and other sandwich spreads so you get a nice daily dose without having to endure the “burn factor” at lunchtime.

Grapefruit

High in fat-burning enzymes, the lowly grapefruit has passed the test, and studies by the Nutrition and Metabolic Research Center have confirmed that adding grapefruit — and grapefruit juice — to your daily diet does have verifiable results in weight loss. In fact, it has been noted that the more grapefruit you consume, the better your chance of losing weight than with a fad diet or short-term exercise routine. The high fiber and water content of a plain grapefruit help cleanse the body and reduce any internal inflammations so the body can heal from infections.

Ginger

Long known as a “tummy-cure,” studies now show how ginger not only helps increase the PH balance of stomach acidity but also helps the gastric secretions more thoroughly digest food so it does not linger in the system and turn into fat. Add fresh-grated ginger root to stir fry dishes, stews, casseroles, broiled fish , vegetables and beans. Ginger tea not only helps with intestinal problems, but provides relief from the inflammation of arthritis and other joint related issues.

Water with Lemon

Drinking large amounts of water naturally helps you “feel full” so you can control your intake, but when you add a fresh slice of lemon to your ice water, you can expect much more than a full tummy. The citrus in the lemon serves as a natural cleanser that washes away free radicals and toxins that buildup in create weight gain. Since the skin of the lemon contains pectin, which helps stop the body from absorbing sugars quickly, consider blending a whole lemon and using the puree to add to your drinks as the day goes along.

Schweineschnitzel, a German Food

I learned preparing this food in Germany. This is one of my favorite German foods aside from Schweinebraten. I guess there are also a lot of countries who prepare this kind of food in their own way. I also prepare it my own way. A Schnitzel in German is a cutlet without bones. It is said that when it is coated in breadcrumbs and if it is made of veal, then it is called Wiener Schnitzel, some sort of Vienna Schnitzel I guess. I always served this food with potato salad which is also homemade. It is also served with slices of lemon which I also like. sad to say, I forgot to buy a lemon as I made my last Schnitzel. Here are some ingredients you need and the instructions for cooking it. others may have other way of preparing it.

INGREDIENTS:
6 pork cutlets, lean
salt and black pepper to taste
flour, all-purpose for dredging
3 each egg
3 teaspoon water
1 1/2 cup bread crumbs fresh
8 tablespoons (or more as needed) butter or margarine
4 tablespoon capers
6 wedges lemon

DIRECTION:
Pound the cutlets until thin.
Sprinkle lightly on both sides with salt and pepper.
Dredge them lightly but thoroughly in flour.
Beat the egg lightly with the water and dip the floured cutlets in the mixture; coat with crumbs.
Using the side of a kitchen knife, tap the cutlets lightly so the crumbs will adhere well to the meat.
Heat the butter in a large skillet and, when it is hot but not brown or smoking, sauté the cutlets in it until they are golden brown on both sides.
Arrange the cutlets on a heated serving platter and garnish with the capers and lemon wedges.
Serve immediately.

I just decorated it with some veggies to look good..this is a yummy food. we love it!

Here is a yummy picture of grilled foods. For sure our diet is forgotten when we are in front of this kind of food. This was taken as we attended an acquaintance’s party.
